How I Fell in Love With House Dance (and Why You Should Too)

ree

If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with music, movement, and any chance to lose myself on a dance floor. For years, shuffling has been my outlet—my way of expressing energy and connecting with music. But a recently, I discovered something that completely changed the way I move: House Dance.

House Dance isn’t just a style, it’s a feeling. It was born in the clubs of Chicago and New York in the 1980s, growing out of the underground house music scene. Think sweaty, packed dance floors, pounding basslines, and people moving freely, no choreography—just pure connection to the music. That spirit is still at the heart of House Dance today.

What Makes House Dance Special

The first time I tried House Dance, I was blown away by how different it felt compared to shuffling. The footwork is intricate, but also playful. The torso movement (called “jacking”) makes you feel the groove in your body. Then there’s lofting and floorwork, which flow and expand your movement beyond just steps.

What I love most is the improvisation—there are foundations, yes, but you’re encouraged to make it your own. That freedom is what keeps me coming back.

House Dance + Shuffling: The Perfect Pair

When I started practicing House Dance, I realized how naturally it complemented my shuffle style. The grooves helped me stay grounded in the music. The footwork gave me more variety when creating combos. And lofting challenged me to play with levels and storytelling.

That’s why I started adding House Dance tutorials to The Shuffle Vault. If you’ve been looking to expand your shuffle skills or simply want to vibe differently to house music, these tutorials are such a fun way to cross-train. Inside The Shuffle Vault, you’ll find:

  • Step-by-step breakdowns of foundational House Dance moves.

  • Ways to blend those moves with shuffle footwork.

  • Choreos to help you build flow and confidence on the dance floor.

Why I Think Everyone Should Try House Dance

House Dance isn’t about being perfect. It’s about vibing. It’s about community. It’s about letting go and trusting the music to guide you. Honestly, some of my favorite dance sessions haven’t been performances or choreographed videos—they’ve been me, at home or in a club, completely lost in the music with House Dance.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your shuffle journey or wanted to deepen your musicality, House Dance is a game-changer. It makes you a better dancer, but more importantly, it makes dancing more fun.
